The Maine Coon Size Compared To A Human

Maine Coons are known as big cats and people want to know how big they might get when you compare them to house members.

Whether that’s a child, a female or an average sized man, then Maine Coon will likely grow larger in relation to the people around them.

They are larger than the average cat, even from birth, but they don’t grow up to be wild cat type size.

So where do they stop? What size do Maine Coons get to in relation to the humans who feed them?

How does the Maine Coon compare in size to a human?

An average Maine Coon is around 13 to 14 inches in height and weighs around 18 lbs (8.2kg). For most humans this will be around the knee level when they walk by. For two year old children the Maine Coon is just under half their height.

It’s well known that Maine Coons mature late as well, only fully stopping growing when they reach 3 to 5 years old.

So if you compare a Maine Coon when they’re a young adult, they still have some growing to do.

How Big Is The Average Maine Coon

To understand how big the Maine Coon is likely going to be compared to the average sized human, we need to discuss how large Maine Coons actually are.

They are known as the largest domestic cat breed.

But how big is that in reality?

Maine Coons are said to average 10 to 16 inches in height with females weighing 8-18 lbs (3.6-8.2 kg) and males being larger at 15-25 lbs (6.8–11.3 kg).

So an average Maine Coon might be 13 inches in height and 18lbs (8.2kg)

That’s big for a cat, so how does it stack up against humans?

The Maine Coon Compared To An Average Female

According to various medical sites, the average height for a female in the United States is 5ft 4 inches tall.

That’s a total of 64 inches (163cm).

That’s 4.8 times the height of an average Maine Coon.

Roughly to scale, here’s what that looks like.

As you can see an average sized Maine Coon with an average sized female the cat will come up to the bottom half of the knee.

A big Maine Coon would come up to the lower part of the thigh.

The Maine Coon Compared To An Average Male

Males are obviously taller than females on average.

But how much taller?

Again, it seems the average height for a human male is 5ft 9 inches tall.

That’s a total of 69 inches (175cm).

So what does that look like in practice?

For a man a median Maine Coon would come up to the top of the shins, and a large Maine Coon might be up to his knee socket.

The Maine Coon Compared To Children

If we are going to compare a Maine Coon to a child the issue might be how old the child is.

Children grow at quite a rapid rate and there can be a great height difference from one year to the next.

I’ve taken 10 years old as a rough guide here.

At 10 years of age, the height difference between boys and girls isn’t large, with females being 50 to 59 inches and males 50.5 to 59 inches.

An average might be 55 inches (140cm) which is 4ft 9 inches tall.

Here’s what that may look like.

Compared to a young child a Maine Coon is going to be up to their lower thigh without an issue.

A large Maine Coon will be half way up the thigh.

The Maine Coon Compared To A Baby

The average height for a 2 year old human is 33.5 inches (85cm) for girls and 34.2 inches (87cm) for boys.

Not a big difference, but here’s what that may look like.

That’s pretty much half the height, just under, of a 2 year old.

Stretched out it’s going to be taller – and that’s an average Maine Coon.

Conclusion

Maine Coons are known as the largest domestic cat breed.

They’re known as ‘gentle giants’, so no matter how large they grow they are affable and nonaggressive with their size.

Which is lucky.

Maine Coon is a natural, loving, and intelligent animal with a long lifespan that can live for over 20 years in some cases.

Compared to adult humans you can expect a Maine Coon to be around the knee area, but a large Maine Coon when walking by will start to be just above knee level for many of us.
